Born James Gabriel Keogh, December 1, 1987, in Melbourne, Australia. His musical talent helped him ink a five-album deal with Atlantic Records, releasing his debut EP, "God Loves You When You're Dancing". On the 2013 Triple J Hottest 100, his song "Riptide" was voted number one. Joy's debut studio album "Dream Your Life Away" was released consecutively September 5, 2014 in Australia and September 9, 2014 to the rest of the world. He was named Best Male Artist at the 2015 ARIA Music Awards. Nation of Two, his second studio album, was eventually released in 2018.
The "Nation of Two" retains Joy's previous album's musical approach using ukulele chords and slightly strained vocals, the album's production is a step up from "Dream Your Life Away." Despite some bland lyrics, Joy adds more harmonies, horns, and drums, giving it a casual rhythm and creating an album full of summer songs.
The album begins with the song "Call If You Need Me," which sets the tone for Joy's full concentration on love throughout the album. The song's initial words – "I adore you in the morning when your blood pours to your cheeks" – reflect a more intimate tone than his debut album's more conventional love songs.
Vance Joy’s new single - "Clarity," released - April 7, 2022, along with a colorful music video directed by Agueda Sfer and lyrics written by Vance Joy & Joel Little. This piece is part of the singer's third album, "In Our Own Sweet Time”- out June 10. The lyrics portray a shy narrator developing affections for someone, further realizing he didn't react quickly enough to their feelings.
In an interview with Tone Deaf, Vance shared,” It’s very upbeat and poppy. Dan Wilson says if there is a song you might be a bit shy about because it feels poppy or makes you feel uncomfortable because it’s saying something really directly that’s probably the single. I got that feeling from ‘Clarity’. When we finished the song Joel [Little, producer] said he could imagine the feel of the production – when he sent it back to me, with the full production, it just exploded.”
The album, which was mostly composed during the pandemic, is about making a life – and a world – with someone wonderful. Vance explains, “I’m always drawn to the idea of timelessness or that shared moment that takes you out of the chaos outside. If the world is crazy, you can retreat somewhere. It’s always hard to think of the right title but I think that sums up the album perfectly”.
Lyrics From Genius
[Verse 1]
The day began like all the rest
A frantic beating in my chest
A panicked reeling in my brain
Perspective lost but nothing gained
[Pre-Chorus]
I was so stuck inside my shell
Then the ground began to sway
I realized what mattered most to me
[Chorus]
When the stars began to fall right out of the sky
And the seas were rising up I had one thing in mind
It was you, it was you, it was you
It was you, it was you, it was you
When the road began to crumble in front of my eyes
There was only one person I wanted to find
It was you, it was you, it was you
It was you, it was you, it was you
Darling, еh-eh-eh
[Verse 2]
The prеcious moments that we shared
You slowed time down inside my head
I wish I'd found this clarity
While I still had you close to me
[Pre-Chorus]
But I was stuck inside my shell
Until the ground began to sway
I realized what mattered most that day
[Chorus]
When the stars began to fall right out of the sky
And the seas were rising up I had one thing in mind
It was you, it was you, it was you
It was you, it was you, it was you
When the road began to crumble in front of my eyes
There was only one person I wanted to find
It was you, it was you, it was you
It was you, it was you, it was you
Darling, eh-eh-eh
[Bridge]
When the stars began to fall right out of the sky
And the seas were rising up I had one thing in mind
It was you, it was you, it was you
It was you, it was you, it was you
[Chorus]
When the road began to crumble in front of my eyes
There was only one person I wanted to find
It was you, it was you, it was you
It was you, it was you, it was you
Darling, eh-eh-eh
It was you, it was you, it was you
Darling, eh-eh-eh
[Outro]
It was you, it was you, it was you
