Due to ongoing security concerns, including recent incidents such as a large-scale prison escape, the U.S. government has imposed restrictions on American personnel in Haiti.
Despite the arrival of American military forces to enhance security at the U.S. Embassy in Port-Au-Prince, the State Department's warning against traveling to Haiti still stands. The Travel Advisory for Haiti remains at level four, discouraging all travel to the country. Similar level four countries include Russia, Syria, and Burkina Faso.
“The U.S. Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens is severely limited. While the U.S. Embassy is unable to facilitate travel out of the country, U.S. citizens in Haiti who wish to record their presence and provide updated contact information should complete our crisis intake form at: https://mytravel.state.gov/s/crisis-intake.”
Due to ongoing security concerns, including recent incidents such as a large-scale prison escape, the U.S. government has imposed restrictions on American personnel in Haiti. These restrictions include limiting movement to specific areas near the Embassy, prohibiting the use of public transportation, and enforcing a curfew between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. additionally, all family members of U.S. government employees and non-emergency personnel have been advised to leave the country. Despite these warnings, cruise ships are still making stops in Haiti.
Advice from US. Embassy include action to take:
Do not travel to Haiti.
If you are in Haiti:
• Avoid crowds.
• Monitor local media for updates and avoid areas where violence, demonstrations, or disruptions are reported to be happening.
• Keep a low profile.
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Be prepared to shelter in place for an extended time period.
• Avoid being outside after dark.
• Stay alert in areas frequented by foreign visitors.
• Review your personal security plans.
• Have travel documents up-to-date and easily accessible.
• Carry proper identification.
The U.S. Embassy in Haiti is still operating despite the recent surge in gang violence nearby. Due to the escalating situation, the State Department has taken the necessary steps to ensure the safety of embassy personnel by arranging for additional staff to leave the area. It is important to note that all individuals arriving or departing from the airport are affiliated with the U.S. government.
The State Department remains vigilant in adapting its approach to embassy operations based on the mission, local security conditions, and relevant health concerns in different parts of the world.
The State Department issued warnings about the perilous overland journey from Port-au-Prince to Cap Haitien. To ensure their safety, travelers are advised to opt for the Cap-Haitien flight instead, if they have confidence in reaching the airport securely.
It's important to note that overland travel from other areas of Haiti to Cap-Haitien is not available. "We continue to work on options for departures out of Port-au-Prince and will let you know about them as soon as we are able to safely and securely arrange them."
American citizens opting for U.S. government arranged flights are required to sign a promissory note committing to repay the government for the flight expenses. Moving around Haiti comes with risks that you assume on your own. The government cannot assure your safety on the way to airports, borders, or while traveling further. Before journeying anywhere in Haiti, travelers must evaluate their personal security. Only proceed with leaving Haiti or traveling within if you are confident it is secure for you.
