Following the incident, the boy was airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition, as per the police.
New information emerged on Monday following an incident where a 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself at a residence in Homestead(localnews.com).
The child, according to Homestead police, managed to shoot himself in the foot with a gun belonging to his mother. It was revealed that his mother is a police officer with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department.
The authorities reported that the shooting took place at approximately 1:55 p.m. on Sunday along Southeast 26th Terrace.
The police mentioned that the officer was in the process of preparing food when her son gained access to her firearm and unintentionally discharged it.
Confirming that the gun was privately owned and not the officer's official service weapon, the authorities provided this detail.
Following the incident, the boy was airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition, as per the police.
The mother has since been taken into custody on charges of child neglect resulting in significant bodily harm. She has been identified as Stephanie Alondra Jerez.
“The Homestead Police Department takes cases involving child endangerment very seriously, and we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all children in our community,” the department said Monday in a news release. “The Homestead Police Department urges all gun owners to securely store firearms and to educate themselves and their families about gun safety.”
“Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is aware of a non-school related incident involving a Miami-Dade Schools Police officer that occurred over the weekend,” the district said in a statement. “The officer has been arrested by the Homestead Police Department. The Miami-Dade Schools Police Department has relieved the officer of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.”
Jerez made an appearance in bond court on Monday morning, with the judge deciding to set her bond at $5,000. The judge mentioned that Jerez could spend time with her son, unless there are any alterations in the Florida Department of Children and Families order. Furthermore, the judge emphasized that Jerez is prohibited from having guns in her residence when children are present and can only carry a gun if it's related to her job
"Stephanie Jerez's son is recovering well. The judicial system and police department will understand that this is a tragedy that does not require additional punishment," her defense attorney, Robert C. Buschel, said in a statement.
