Since April 11, a total of 38 containers have already been successfully cleared away. This crucial task is essential in ensuring the safe relocation of the M/V Dali and the eventual full reopening of the Fort McHenry Channel. By removing these containers, it allows for a secure pathway to dismantle the sections of the Key Bridge that are currently obstructing the ship's bow. This process not only lightens the load on the vessel but also paves the way for its smooth movement.
Simultaneously, the diligent efforts to clear the wreckage and debris at the site are ongoing. This includes the breaking up of the submerged roadbed from span 19 and the removal of a section of span 17. All the rubble and debris collected are being transported to Sparrows Point, Maryland for proper processing and recycling. Despite the limited marine traffic, a commendable number of 69 vessels have successfully navigated through the temporary alternate channels since their establishment.
“There has been incredible progress this week towards our goal to open the limited access deep draft channel,” said Col. Estee Pinchasin, commander, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, Unified Command. “Our amazing team of local, state, federal and community responders remain focused on the safe and efficient removal of debris and wreckage from the federal channel and waterway.”
The Unified Command is maintaining a 2000-yard maritime Safety Zone around the incident site. The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) has been updated as of April 9, extending for two nautical miles in radius from the center of the bridge and up to 1500 feet above ground level (AGL).
Remember, there is a strict zero-tolerance policy for any UAS/drone use within the designated “No Drone Zone” by the FAA. Violators may face arrest, prosecution, fines, and/or imprisonment. Mariners are advised to stay informed by monitoring VHF-FM marine channel 16 for the latest updates issued by the COTP through a Broadcast Notice to Mariners (BNM).
The Key Bridge Response 2024 Unified Command comprises the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Maryland Department of the Environment, Maryland Transportation Authority, Maryland State Police, and Witt O’Brien’s representing Synergy Marine.
