SEA at the forefront of a movement to switch to PFAS-free firefighting foam at airports across the country

In December 2022, Congress formally instructed the FAA to develop a transition strategy, which was subsequently released in May 2023. Prior to the implementation of this plan, preparations at SEA were already in full swing.

The Port of Seattle Fire Department at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) has partnered with TRS Group (TRS) to pioneer the use of the PerfluorAd process in the United States for removing and cleaning AFFF from ARFF vehicles. Randy Krause, Fire Chief, and Megan King, Contaminated Soil & Groundwater Program Manager, have set up a regional center at SEA to assist smaller airports in cleaning their vehicles.

The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is well underway to be the first airport in the nation to use a special cleaning technology that more fully removes foam containing PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), commonly referred to as “forever chemicals,” from airport fire trucks and replace it with new fluorine-free foam.

TRS, the exclusive licensee of PerfluorAd technology in North America, not only cleans firefighting systems but also concentrates waste streams, reducing offsite waste disposal, supporting onsite wastewater discharge, and cutting costs and liability.

“The transition away from PFAS has been a top priority, met with urgency and diligence,” said Port of Seattle Commission Vice President Toshiko Hasegawa. “We’re proud to lead as the first airport to implement this advanced level of remediation. We’re grateful to government partners that have supported us, and we are committed to supporting others preparing to transition.

TRS Group, an employee-owned environmental remediation firm, has joint ventures and partnerships across Europe, South America, and Asia. With our patented thermal remediation and PerfluorAd technologies, we have successfully cleaned over 200 sites.

The Port of Seattle Fire Department has very much been at the forefront of advocating for the shift away from PFAS foam. Since 2018, the Port has collaborated extensively with local, state, and national allies to raise awareness about the necessity for substitution.

In December 2022, Congress formally instructed the FAA to develop a transition strategy, which was subsequently released in May 2023. Prior to the implementation of this plan, preparations at SEA were already in full swing. The Port went the extra mile to identify the most efficient method for removing and replacing PFAS from the ARFF vehicles.

“For the health and safety of our firefighters and the public, I felt it was my duty to make this happen for our department and find the best possible solution available,” said Port of Seattle Fire Chief Randy Krause.

Besides the Port's five ARFF vehicles, TRS will also wash three vehicles belonging to King County International Airport and used by the King County Sheriff's Office as per a collaborative agreement between the Port and King County.

"By partnering with the Port of Seattle to have PFAS contamination removed from our vehicles at King County Airport, we're doing our part to reduce the community's exposure to these 'forever chemicals,' as well as protecting the natural environment that we all cherish here in the Puget Sound regions, “said Capt. Jonathan Youngblood, ARFF chief at King County International Airport—Boeing Field.

The Port has extended invitations to airport fire departments from across the United States and Canada to witness the cleaning process. At the moment, Salt Lake City (SLC) and Tucson (TUS) are contemplating visits, whereas Oakland (OAK) and San Francisco (SFO) have already confirmed their visits. Additionally, representatives from King County Wastewater Division, Washington Department of Ecology, King County Public Health, and the Federal Aviation Administration will be paying a visit to the firehouse.
