In a groundbreaking move for the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers have announced their purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from United Airlines, making them the first team in the league to take this significant step toward reducing emissions. The team has acquired enough SAF to cover its game-related travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles this Sunday.

United Airlines has established itself as a leader in the aviation industry by committing to
achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 without relying on voluntary carbon offsets. The airline has been at the forefront of SAF utilization, purchasing more sustainable fuel than any other U.S. airline in 2023. United has successfully implemented blends of SAF at five airports across the U.S. and Europe, including San Francisco International Airport.
The 49ers have long demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship and
community initiatives. Their home stadium, Levi's® Stadium, was the first professional football venue in the U.S. to earn LEED Gold certification, showcasing its sustainable design and operations. The stadium's solar panels generate enough energy to power every home game for the team. Additionally, the 49ers are involved in the "Faithful to the Planet" initiative, a charitable effort supported by United and other corporate partners that aims to fund projects focused on ocean pollution reduction and tree planting and protection.
By purchasing SAF, the 49ers are participating in United's Eco-Skies Alliance, which allows companies to collaborate on the higher costs associated with purchasing lower-emission fuels. SAF typically costs two to four times more than traditional jet fuel, making this partnership vital for financial sustainability in transitioning to greener practices.
Launched in April 2021, the Eco-Skies Alliance has collectively contributed to the purchase of nearly 15 million gallons of SAF, resulting in significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions—approximately 150,000 metric tons—enough to allow for close to one billion passenger miles flown.
This pioneering partnership between the 49ers and United Airlines marks a significant step toward sustainable practices in professional sports, setting a precedent for other teams and organizations to follow.
