Brown wants to inform you about a recent data breach that occurred in February 2024 at Change Healthcare, the largest electronic data clearinghouse in the country. This clearinghouse, which is a part of UnitedHealth, is utilized by numerous healthcare providers such as doctor's offices, hospitals, pharmacies, and insurers for various essential administrative tasks related to healthcare delivery.
Attorney General Brown is urging Maryland residents to safeguard themselves by utilizing the complimentary credit monitoring and theft protection services offered in response to the data breach. The cyberattack in February disrupted the operations of numerous medical facilities and led to the exposure of sensitive personal and health information on the dark web.
The full extent of the breach's impact on patients remains unknown, but Change Healthcare has warned that it could affect up to one-third of the American population. With the company yet to inform individuals about the breach's impact on their data, Attorney General Brown is raising awareness about the breach and the available resources, including those provided by Change Healthcare.
Change Healthcare is providing complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection for two years to all residents of Maryland who suspect they may have been affected. While the website and call center cannot confirm if an individual's data was compromised, they can assist in signing up for the free services.
Marylanders are encouraged to assume their data was part of the breach and take advantage of the free credit monitoring and identity theft protection by contacting Change Healthcare.
