Adrian Dexter Talbot, 58, of Slidell, who owned and operated Medex Clinical Consultants (Medex), a medical clinic in Slidell, was convicted based on court documents and trial evidence. Despite no longer being physically present at the Slidell clinic after taking a full-time job in Pineville, Louisiana in 2015, Talbot continued to authorize prescriptions, including opioids, through pre-signed documents for individuals he did not personally assess.
A Louisiana physician was found guilty by a federal jury yesterday for his involvement in illegally distributing over 1.8 million doses of Schedule II controlled substances, such as oxycodone and morphine, and for defrauding health care benefit programs of more than $5.4 million.
Later, he hired another practitioner who also pre-signed prescriptions under Talbot's direction, which were then dispensed in exchange for cash payments deposited into Medex's account.
The trial also revealed that Talbot falsified patient records to conceal the illegal activities. Patients used their insurance benefits to fill these prescriptions, leading Medicare, Medicaid, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana to be fraudulently billed for drugs prescribed without proper medical evaluation or necessity.
Talbot was convicted on multiple charges including conspiracy to unlawfully distribute controlled substances, unlawful distribution of controlled substances, maintaining a drug-involved premises, and conspiracy to commit health care fraud. His sentencing is scheduled for October 23, with potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison for each distribution count and a maximum of 10 years for the health care fraud conspiracy charge.
