The EPA has classified PCBs as "probable human carcinogens" due to their harmful effects on reproduction, the nervous system, immunity, and hormones. It remains uncertain whether the cancer cases at NC State are related to PCB exposure.
North Carolina State University is currently investigating the presence of cancer-causing PCBs in one of its campus buildings. PCBs were banned in the U.S. in 1979 due to their harmful effects on health, but products made before the ban may still contain them.
An employee at NC State raised health concerns about Poe Hall in August 2023, prompting the university to conduct testing on building materials. According to Vice Chancellor Warwick Arden, the investigation was initiated in response to these reports during a recent webinar. "The concerns specifically mentioned PCBs, along with lead and asbestos," Arden said (People Magazine).
The EPA has classified PCBs as "probable human carcinogens" due to their harmful effects on reproduction, the nervous system, immunity, and hormones. It remains uncertain whether the cancer cases at NC State are related to PCB exposure. Poe Hall, constructed in 1971, was built during a time when PCBs were commonly used in various building materials before their ban in 1979.
“After receiving analytical results from the laboratory in November that reported detections of PCBs in some dust and some bulk samples, NCSU closed Poe Hall and shut down the HVAC systems out of an abundance of caution, pending further investigation,” a university report, published February 2024, states.
WRAL in Raleigh, North Carolina has received an overwhelming response from over 150 individuals who have reported cases of cancer or other serious illnesses. These reports have been pouring in since the university's investigation began, prompting the local outlet to collect health data from both current and former students and employees.
It is important to note that these cases have not yet been officially linked to Poe Hall, and they cannot be classified as a "cancer cluster" as defined by the National Cancer Institute.
However, during a recent webinar, State Epidemiologist Zack Moore revealed that the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has personally heard from some of these individuals who are battling cancer or other severe health conditions.
While NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson (People Magazine) has stated that the university will refrain from making extensive comments on the investigation, they have assured the public that updates will be provided when deemed appropriate. The investigation continues, and the health and well-being of the university community remains a top priority.
"I recognize that people are very eager for answers to their questions," he said. "This is very stressful, and I understand that. It's a particular concern to us that we move through this as quickly, but as thoroughly as we can."
