The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is currently examining a fatal shooting involving law enforcement that took place in Suitland, Maryland, on Thursday evening. At approximately 5:25 p.m. on February 1, 2024, officers from the Prince George’s County Police Department rushed to an apartment in the 5100 block of Suitland Road in response to a 911 call reporting a break-in in progress at the residence.
Upon arrival, one officer entered the apartment and encountered an adult male, issuing commands. During this encounter, the officer discharged their service weapon, fatally injuring the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Thankfully, no officers sustained injuries. Two handguns were recovered from the vicinity of the deceased individual.
Preliminary investigations by the IID( Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General) have identified the deceased as 31-year-old Melvin Jay of Suitland, who was a resident of the home but not the original 911 caller.
The IID typically discloses the names of the deceased and the discharging officers within two business days of the incident, unless there are concerns for officer safety. In this case, the officer who discharged their weapon has been identified as Prince George’s County Police Officer Braxton Shelton, who possesses four years of law enforcement experience and is assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.
The IID is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. Officers present at the scene were equipped with body-worn cameras, which recorded the incident.
Generally, the IID releases body camera footage within 20 business days of an incident. However, certain circumstances may necessitate an extension of this timeframe, such as the need for additional time to conduct witness interviews or technical delays related to protecting the identities of civilian witnesses. Additionally, family members may be given the opportunity to view the video before its public release.
