The investigation, initiated in September 2023 by DPSCS's Intelligence and Investigative Division, uncovered evidence suggesting Myers engaged in an inappropriate romantic relationship with an incarcerated individual.
Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced today that Ajee Xavier Myers, a Correctional Dietary Officer (CDO) with three years of service, has pleaded guilty to misconduct in office at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in Jessup, Anne Arundel County. The investigation, led jointly by the Office of the Attorney General’s Organized Crime Unit (OCU) and the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS), revealed serious breaches of conduct.
Attorney General Anthony Brown emphasized the gravity of employee misconduct within the correctional system, highlighting its potential to erode trust and jeopardize the safety of both inmates and staff. He reaffirmed the commitment to collaboration with DPSCS in pursuing such cases to safeguard Maryland's correctional facilities.
On July 16, 2024, Myers admitted guilt before Judge Donna M. Schaeffer of the Circuit Court of Maryland for Anne Arundel County. As part of the plea deal, Myers received a two-year suspended sentence and three years of probation, coupled with her agreement to resign from DPSCS.
The investigation, initiated in September 2023 by DPSCS's Intelligence and Investigative Division, uncovered evidence suggesting Myers engaged in an inappropriate romantic relationship with an incarcerated individual. Over the span of September 2023 to January 2024, she abused her authority by granting unauthorized privileges, failing to report rule violations, transferring money from her commissary to the inmate, and making over 800 calls to the inmate on recorded facility phones within three months.
Furthermore, investigators found that Myers interrogated another inmate whom she viewed as a romantic rival, pressuring the individual for details about their relationship with her victim.
“The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services treats investigating all allegations of staff misconduct and corruption as a priority. These actions violate the public trust and jeopardize the safety and security of our institutions, staff and incarcerated community,” said DPSCS Secretary Carolyn Scruggs. “Upon learning of these allegations, the DPSCS Special Investigations Section immediately initiated a criminal investigation into this matter, which ultimately led to the criminal charging of former staff member Myers. I appreciate the diligent work of the investigative team and the partnership of the Office of the Attorney General in the successful prosecution of this case.”
The case underscores ongoing challenges within Maryland's correctional system and the vigilance required to maintain its integrity and safety standards.
