Excitement is building for Moran's upcoming Art + Design sale, especially with the exposé of a newly uncovered painting by American Modernist Agnes Pelton. Known for her rare 'transcendental desert' period, only a few canvases by Pelton have surfaced in the last half-century.
Pelton, born in 1881, was a pioneering artist who seamlessly unified spiritual and abstract themes into her work. "Flowering," created in 1929 during her peak, exemplifies her transcendentalist style. Estimated at $300,000-500,000, this oil painting measures 24" H x 19" W and is presented in its original Pelton-designed silver-grey frame.
In its heyday, "Flowering" was prominently displayed at various art exhibitions, including shows at the Montross Gallery in NYC in 1929, the Plainfield Public Library in New Jersey in 1931, and others across Maine and Massachusetts.
Pelton's move to Cathedral City, California in the late 1920s, driven by her study of Theosophy, profoundly influenced her artistic journey. The desert's isolation nurtured her creativity, setting her apart from her peers. Over time, Pelton earned acclaim as one of the most influential female painters of the 20th century, culminating in a celebrated retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2020, elevating her alongside luminaries like Georgia O'Keeffe.
"Flowering" boasts a distinguished provenance, passing from Pelton to her acquaintances Matille Prigge "Billie" Seaman and Josephine Morse True of Cathedral City, CA. Later acquired by Mrs. Anne-Marie Boyce in San Diego in the 1990s, the painting remained unseen for nearly a century until Moran's rediscovered it during an estate consignment review.
