Zishan Alvi, a 45-year-old resident of Inverness, is facing serious allegations in connection with his Chicago-based laboratory that specialized in COVID-19 testing. According to court documents, between February 2021 and February 2022, Alvi orchestrated a scheme to submit false claims to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for COVID-19 tests that were never actually conducted.
In a troubling case of healthcare fraud, Zishan Alvi, a 45-year-old resident of Inverness, Illinois, has pleaded guilty to his involvement in a scheme that exploited COVID-19 testing protocols. Court documents reveal that Alvi owned a laboratory in Chicago that conducted COVID-19 tests. However, between February 2021 and February 2022, he orchestrated the submission of fraudulent claims to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for tests that were never actually performed.
As part of this deceitful operation, the laboratory issued negative COVID-19 test results to patients, despite the fact that either the tests hadn’t been conducted or the results were inconclusive. Alvi was fully aware of these practices yet continued to submit claims to HRSA, resulting in the laboratory receiving over $14 million in payments for tests that never took place.
Alvi has now pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and is set to be sentenced on February 7, 2025. He faces a potential maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine his sentence based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors. This case underscores the ongoing challenges of ensuring integrity in healthcare services during the pandemic.
