FDA Sends Warning Letter to Austrofood, Enhances Efforts to Ensure Safety of Cinnamon Products in the U.S.

Updated: Sep 16

The FDA's primary concern is that the contamination resulted from economically motivated adulteration, particularly with cinnamon.

Last fall, a multi-agency investigation was launched into apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches after they were recalled due to harmful levels of lead and chromium. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with health and agriculture departments from North Carolina, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, led the probe into the contamination of these products, manufactured by Austrofood at its facility in Ecuador.

The FDA's primary concern is that the contamination resulted from economically motivated adulteration, particularly with cinnamon. As a result, the agency has intensified efforts to monitor spices like cinnamon in the food supply, especially in products consumed by young children.

On August 9, the FDA issued a warning letter to Austrofood, citing violations of safety regulations under the Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis rules. The letter criticized Austrofood for failing to properly analyze and control the hazard of lead in cinnamon, which contributed to the adulteration of the apple cinnamon puree pouches. The letter also highlighted that these products, due to their lead content, were deemed adulterated under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

The FDA's response includes increased sampling and testing of cinnamon products and recalls of contaminated items. State partners have also been active in monitoring and issuing recalls based on elevated lead levels found in ground cinnamon.

In addition to immediate actions, the FDA is advancing its Closer to Zero initiative, which aims to minimize exposure to harmful contaminants in foods, particularly those consumed by infants and young children. The agency is also seeking congressional approval for new powers to establish binding contamination limits, enforce mandatory testing, and enhance recall authority.

Furthermore, the FDA is strengthening oversight of foreign food imports, including placing distributor Negasmart on multiple import alerts due to contamination issues. The agency remains committed to improving food safety and reducing contaminants, working closely with federal and state partners to safeguard public health.
