A pharmaceutical marketer from Texas has been given a sentence of two years and five months behind bars. According to the Justice Departments press release, they have been instructed to pay back more than $59 million for their involvement in a scheme to deceive the United States, accepting unlawful kickbacks for referrals related to compounded medications, and engaging in money laundering.
Court records and trial evidence revealed that Quintan Cockerell, a 43-year-old resident of Palos Verdes Estates, California, a medical marketer, collaborated with accomplices to develop and promote costly compounded medications that were not medically necessary. Cockerell and his associates utilized pre-filled prescription pads that highlighted the pricy formulations for doctors to conveniently choose from.
Cockerell and his accomplices at the compounding pharmacy devised a scheme where they used "standing orders" to switch ingredients in prescribed medications, boosting insurance reimbursements.

Additionally, they treated doctors to extravagant trips to destinations like Las Vegas, Mexico, and the Grand Caymans.
The pharmacy tried to hide the illegal kickbacks Cockerell got by paying his wife as a fake employee. During the trial, it was revealed that Cockerell's wife never actually worked at the pharmacy, but Cockerell used her email to communicate with them and received kickback checks in her name. He then used the money from the kickback scheme. In October 2023, a federal jury in the Northern District of Texas found Cockerell guilty of conspiracy to defraud the United States, receiving kickbacks, and money laundering.
