In a strange twist of events, a driver donned in a Cookie Monster mask was caught speeding by a roadside camera on the A45 near Dortmund. On October 8, Dortmund Police shared a snapshot of the quirky incident on social media, humorously commenting, "Yes, of course … it's totally funny to put a Cookie Monster mask over your head, drive along the A45 and get flashed," alluding to the camera’s flash.
The incident took place on September 20, when the driver, who remains unidentified, was clocked exceeding the speed limit by 11 kilometers per hour. The vehicle, an Audi, is registered to a 57-year-old man, who will soon receive a letter from the traffic fines office, accompanied by a fine of 40 euros.
While the humorous side of the situation is evident, police officials emphasized the serious implications of such reckless behavior. Peter Bandermann, a spokesperson for Dortmund Police, warned, "Anyone who causes a serious accident is not only responsible for property damage but, in the worst case, may also be responsible for killing a person." He added that the thrill of wearing a mask while driving could significantly impair vision, increasing the risk of accidents.
This incident comes amid a broader crackdown on distractions and reckless behavior on German roads. Recently, legislation has been passed to penalize those who take photos of fatal accidents, reflecting the government's commitment to maintaining safety and privacy.
