On Friday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) made a significant move by imposing financial sanctions on Camacho-Goicochea and Maldonado-Bustos.
Rodolfo Maldonado-Bustos, famously referred to as Don Jose, and Euclides Camacho-Goicochea, known by the alias El Quilles, have found themselves in hot water. These two individuals, holding influential positions within the notorious La Nueva Familia Michoacana drug cartel, have been indicted by a federal grand jury. The charges against them include conspiring to possess heroin with the intention to distribute it and conspiring to import heroin into the United States. The law is closing in on these alleged criminals, and justice will prevail.
On Friday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) made a significant move by imposing financial sanctions on Camacho-Goicochea and Maldonado-Bustos. These two individuals, who are currently on the run, are suspected to be hiding out in Mexico.
“These actions demonstrate that in addition to holding cartel leaders accountable for their crimes, we are working together with our partners at the Treasury Department to hit the cartels’ criminal operations where it hurts the most – their profits,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. “We will continue to mobilize a whole-of-government effort to disrupt the cartels profiting from the drug trafficking and human smuggling that devastate communities and endanger our national security.”
“These cartel members allegedly imported massive amounts of heroin from Mexico to the Atlanta area and elsewhere in the United States,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan for the Northern District of Georgia. “The federal indictments in conjunction with the recent imposition of OFAC sanctions send a strong message that our office, in coordination with our law enforcement partners, will relentlessly investigate, prosecute, and defund individuals around the globe who import deadly drugs into our communities.”
In September 2016, the DEA and the IRS-CI launched an inquiry into the activities of the La Nueva Familia Michoacana cartel, a Mexico-based organization. The indictments and evidence presented in court revealed that the cartel members were involved in the illicit importation of heroin, cocaine, and marijuana into the United States, specifically the Northern District of Georgia. During the course of the investigation, law enforcement agents successfully identified Maldonado-Bustos as a prominent figure within the cartel. It is alleged that he played a crucial role in overseeing the production of substantial amounts of heroin in Mexico.
The investigation uncovered a shocking revelation - Maldonado-Bustos was supposedly the mastermind behind the gum harvesting from opium fields, the procurement of chemicals to convert it into heroin, and the distribution of this heroin to Camacho-Goicochea and other co-conspirators in Mexico.
Their mission? To smuggle the heroin into various cities in the United States, including Atlanta and Houston. But that's not all. The investigation also unveiled that Camacho-Goicochea was allegedly responsible for organizing the collection and transfer of drug profits from the United States back to Mexico. In a major operation, law enforcement agents seized a staggering $580,000 in drug proceeds from vehicles and homes in Atlanta, which were ultimately intended for the cartel in Mexico.
“Denying drug cartels the profits earned from distributing poison in our communities is an essential tool in DEA’s efforts to combat these drug cartels,” said Special Agent in Charge Robert J. Murphy of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Atlanta Field Division. “DEA Atlanta will continue to attack the La Nueva Familia cartel on all fronts by arresting its members, as well as seizing their drugs and assets.”
“IRS Criminal Investigation special agents are highly skilled financial investigators who can unravel complex schemes cartels use to hide their money,” said Special Agent in Charge Demetrius Hardeman of IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI)’s Atlanta Field Office. “IRS-CI and other members of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces will continue working together to bring these international criminals to justice.”
Rodolfo Maldonado-Bustos, famously referred to as Don Jose, aged 59, and Euclides Camacho-Goicochea, known as El Quilles, aged 51, hailing from Guerrero, Mexico, have been accused of conspiring to possess heroin with the intention to distribute it and conspiring to import heroin into the United States. Additionally, Camacho-Goicochea faces charges of conspiring to launder monetary instruments. These indictments, which were issued in August 2017, have recently been unveiled to the public.
