Cameron Monte Smith, a Canadian national, has entered a guilty plea for one count of damaging an energy facility in the District of North Dakota and another count for a similar offense in the District of South Dakota.
In May 2023, Smith acknowledged causing over $100,000 in damages to the Wheelock substation, situated near Ray, North Dakota. This facility is managed by Mountrail-Williams Electric Cooperative and Basin Electric Power Cooperative.

A sentencing hearing will be arranged in the future. Smith could face up to 20 years in prison for each charge. A federal district court judge will decide the sentence, taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant legal factors.
