Brands Of Recalled Apple Cinnamon Fruit Pouches Due Lead Levels: FDA’s Investigation Is Ongoing

Recalled cinnamon apple puree and applesauce products: WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches – including three packs, Schnucks-brand cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches and variety pack and Weis-brand cinnamon applesauce pouches.

The Austrofoods facility in Ecuador is currently undergoing an onsite inspection conducted by the FDA. Recalled cinnamon apple puree and applesauce products: WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches – including three packs, Schnucks-brand cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches and variety pack and Weis-brand cinnamon applesauce pouches. In order to determine the safety of the recalled products, samples of cinnamon from the affected lots will be subjected to laboratory analysis.

Once the analysis is complete, the FDA will provide an update on the sample results through this advisory. Up until now, the FDA has collaborated with Ecuadorian authorities to gather information regarding Negasmart, the supplier of cinnamon to Austrofoods.

This includes investigating whether the cinnamon used in the recalled products was also utilized in other products exported to the United States. Through this joint effort, it has been confirmed that Austrofoods is the only direct customer of Negasmart that ships products to the US. Furthermore, it has been verified that Negasmart does not directly export any products to the US.

As of December 11, 2023, the FDA has received a total of 65 reports of adverse events that may potentially be linked to the recalled product. It is important to note that all confirmed complainants, or individuals for whom an adverse event report was submitted, are under the age of 6.

The National Center for Environmental Health at the CDC is currently collaborating with state and local health departments to conduct case finding efforts. The CDC's case definition for state partners includes a blood lead level of 3.5 µg/dL or higher measured within 3 months after consuming a recalled WanaBana, Schnucks, or Weis brand fruit puree product after November 2022.

As of December 8, the CDC has received reports of 46 confirmed cases, 68 probable cases, and 11 suspected cases, totaling 125 cases from 22 different states through their reporting structure. To learn more about their case reporting methodology and findings, please visit the CDC's page.

It is important to note that the CDC and FDA have different data sources, so the counts reported by each agency may not directly correspond. Additionally, some individuals affected by the contaminated product may be included in both the FDA's and CDC's reported numbers, therefore the numbers should not be combined.

The FDA's investigation is still ongoing to determine the source of contamination and whether there are any additional products linked to the illnesses. The FDA will provide updates to the advisory as more information becomes available.
