Federal prosecutors in Argentina have leveled serious accusations against top leaders of Opus Dei, alleging their involvement in the exploitation and trafficking of women. This marks the first criminal case arising from public claims against the Catholic organization.
The investigation focuses on the human trafficking and labor exploitation of at least 44 women who were recruited between 1983 and 2015. A federal judge is set to determine whether to call former Opus Dei officials from Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia to provide testimony as requested by the prosecutors.
In response to these allegations, Opus Dei Argentina has committed to fully cooperating with the judicial process to ensure a fair resolution. A team of prosecutors has found sufficient evidence to pursue a criminal investigation into the organization’s leadership in South America during the specified period, asserting that they engaged in crimes against the recruited women, who were tasked with domestic duties. Opus Dei has firmly denied these claims and reiterated its intention to assist the justice system in clarifying the situation transparently.
