The doctor purportedly misled patients regarding injected substances, and the defendants acquired over $10 million through fraudulent means while submitting inaccurate tax returns.
In Alaska, a federal grand jury has recently indicted an Anchorage doctor and her husband on charges of health care fraud and tax evasion. According to court filings, Dr. Claribel Tan, aged 60 and a practicing rheumatologist, along with her husband Daniel Tan, aged 69, allegedly ran Claribel K. Tan MD LLC (CKTMD) from 2010 to 2023.
The indictment accuses the couple of defrauding health care benefit programs by submitting false claims that distorted medication details and misrepresented the extent of medical services provided to patients. It also alleges they misled patients about the necessity of treatments and fabricated medical records.
Authorities claim the Tans illicitly obtained over $10 million through these fraudulent schemes. Additionally, the Justice Department has seized approximately $8.5 million from the Tans' accounts as part of a related civil action.
The indictment further accuses the Tans of tax evasion, specifically for the years 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. Allegedly, they provided false information to their tax preparer, exaggerated expenses for CKTMD, and underreported their income in filed tax returns. Notably, the indictment states that Daniel Tan did not file returns for 2016, and neither defendant filed returns for 2018 through 2021, despite legal obligations.
The charges against the Tans include health care fraud, willful failure to file tax returns, and attempting to evade taxes. They are set to appear in court today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Scott A. Oravec. If convicted, they could face up to 10 years in prison for health care fraud, five years for each count of tax evasion, and one year for each count of failing to file a tax return. Sentencing, if applicable, will be determined by a federal district court judge, considering various legal guidelines and factors.
