A1 x J1 Ft Tion Wayne - Night Away

UK rap has highlighted a number of viral moments in recent years thanks to social media. On the video calling app Houseparty, a pair of 16-year-old A1 born-Phineas Waweru and 18-year-old J1 born-Joshua Somerkun met during the first lockdown imposed by the coronavirus in early 2020. They soon found musical chemistry and started regularly posting freestyles online, building their following base one video at a time.

The pair began working together, but A1 was reluctant to share their tracks on TikTok.

"For me, it's a thing where I don't like people judging too much, especially when it comes to music. I was scared to put it out." J1 went ahead and did it anyway, for which A1 says he's "thankful". "We didn't know it was going to do this well. And then it just started taking off," J1 says. The artists now have 2.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify, with fans including the likes of KSI and Aitch. Aitch liked them so much he featured on the remix of Latest Trends.

The platinum-selling "Latest Trends," which was released in February 2021, is an exciting party rap track that thumps over soft guitar work. The song gave us our first glimpse of J1's clean flowing and A1's quirky, lively vocal piercings. The music later gave rise to a remix by Manchester rapper Aitch, raising the duo's profile even higher.

After collaborating with rapper SwitchOTR on his song "Coming For You", which has received over 80 million Spotify streams and samples Avicii's 2014 hit "The Nights," A1 x J1 found themselves on the verge of becoming popular once more. A1 x J1 help rework the tune as a breezy, drill-inspired song by using Avicii's original as a template.

The sample-based melody used in A1 x J1's latest single, "Night Away (Dance)," which features Tion Wayne, is taken from Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull's 2011 number-one record, "On The Floor." A1 x J1's pop sensibilities are baked into their rap repertoire, giving their song "Night Away (Dance)" a unique yet recognizable feel. Their sound is similar to the popular music they listened to as children.

As mentioned earlier, the talented duo, fused forces and remixed the 1989 hit classic Lambada by Kaoma. Brazil's Lambada band enjoyed enormous popularity in the 1980s, and thanks in large part to the success of the band-Kaoma, the music won fame. The Portuguese and Spanish words for the song Lambada, which is by the French-Brazilian pop group Kaoma, are "weeping, he/she walked away." Loalwa Braz, a vocalist, contributed some guest vocals.

When it was first released, "Lambada" was thought to be CBS Records' most commercially successful single in Europe. However, the Kaoma group failed to provide due credit for the song's original author, Los Kjarkas, turning their rendition into plagiarism. This led to lawsuits, which the song's original authors—the Bolivian group and their Portuguese-language collaborators—would ultimately win.

Mr. Lamotte d'Incamps, who also uses the name Olivier Lorsac, said he discovered ''Lambada'' in the Brazilian resort of Porto Seguro in 1988. When its copyright was registered at Sacem, the song's composer was listed as Chico de Oliveira, although this was subsequently found to be a pseudonym for Mr. Lamotte d'Incamps. His copyright to the song has been canceled.

Within weeks, the Hermosa brothers said ''Llorando Se Fue'' had been plagiarized.

On the American release of Kaoma's album, the liner notes said of the song, ''Ulysse and Gonzalo Hermosa and Olivier Lorsac contributed to its realization,'' although the song was still credited exclusively to C. de Oliveira.

The Brazilian child duet Chico & Roberta were featured in the accompanying music video, which was shot on Cocos Beach in the Brazilian city of Trancoso, which is located in the state of Bahia.

The Bolivian brothers, who recorded the original version with their group Los Kjarkas in 1981, took legal action against Kaoma for the song's unauthorised translation and were reported to have received a pay-off. The song, with its catchy beat and sensual lyrics, continues to inspire musicians today. US pop singer Jennifer Lopez used the tune in her 2010 hit On The Floor.

Anyways, back to A1 x J1, they sampled songs like "On The Floor" mostly because they found them to be nostalgic. Back then, they listened to a lot of popular songs by well-known musicians, which inspired them to explore other genres and produce music. How did that huge Tion Wayne feature come about, then?

A1: “When we made ‘Night Away’, I thought to myself that I could hear Tion on the song. Our manager is pretty close to his team, so we hit each other up on Instagram. Eventually, I sent him the track and told him he needed to hop on it because I thought he’d sound sick. Later on, me and J1 hit the studio when he dropped his verse, and the rest was history.”
