The recent news release revealed some alarming findings about Red Barn Truck Wash. It seems that the company neglected to implement proper hearing and respiratory protection programs, putting their employees at risk.
An unfortunate incident took place at Red Barn Truck Wash & Service Center LLC in Liberal, Kansas, resulting in the tragic death of an employee. The U.S. Department of Labor has identified hydrogen sulfide gas as the toxic substance responsible for this unfortunate event. Additionally, two other workers were hospitalized after being exposed to the gas while cleaning tanker trailers for the company.
According to a news release from the Department of Labor, the incident occurred on September 1, 2023. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a division of the Department of Labor, has determined that the company failed to properly assess the risks associated with working in confined spaces and testing atmospheric conditions within the tanker trailers. Furthermore, the workers were not adequately trained about the potential dangers involved. As a result, OSHA has imposed a fine of $171,680 for 24 serious and two willful violations.
"Wherever organic matter such as crops and other materials are stored, hydrogen sulfide may be present as a natural byproduct. Workers must never enter storage facilities, tankers or other confined spaces without doing atmospheric testing and wearing protective equipment such as respirators capable of preventing inhalation of this colorless and toxic gas," said Todd Underwood, OSHA Area Director in Wichita, Kansas. "Red Barn Truck Wash & Service Center must implement procedures and training immediately to protect its employees from these preventable injuries."
The recent news release revealed some alarming findings about Red Barn Truck Wash. It seems that the company neglected to implement proper hearing and respiratory protection programs, putting their employees at risk. Not only that, but they also failed to address fall hazards when washing trailers that reached heights of up to nine feet. To make matters worse, Red Barn Truck Wash repeatedly violated OSHA's regulations regarding confined spaces.
Thankfully, OSHA provides guidelines to help employers prioritize employee safety, including measures for confined space safety, hearing conservation, and respiratory protection. Now, the company has a choice to make within the next 15 business days: either comply with the fine or appeal to an independent government committee for a review of the findings.
