The Federal Trade Commission is distributing over $2.4 million in refunds to consumers who were misled by Lurn’s business consulting programs about their potential earnings.
In September 2023, the FTC sued Lurn, claiming that the online business coaching company made baseless claims to sell its various money-making programs. Lurn made extravagant promises, such as becoming a "Stay-At-Home Millionaire" or making "$11,453 per month even if they failed 98% of the time." According to the complaint, the company lacked evidence to support these claims, and very few, if any, consumers actually earned money through these programs.
The company, its CEO Anik Singal, and representatives Tyrone Cohen and David Kettner have agreed to court orders requiring them to cease their unlawful practices. Additionally, Lurn and Singal agreed earlier to pay $2.5 million to the FTC, which will be used to refund consumers they misled.
The complaint highlights that although these programs cost thousands of dollars, very few, if any, consumers actually earned money, despite the company’s numerous claims and endorsements promising significant profits. One of Lurn's programs, "Kindle Cashflow University," claimed to teach consumers how to profit by finding popular e-books on Amazon’s Kindle platform and creating similar copies to sell. Another program, "Email Startup Incubator," promised passive income through affiliate and email marketing.
Additionally, the FTC alleges that Lurn contacted consumers who had already purchased their programs to offer additional "coaching" services, which could cost up to $10,000. Lurn's telemarketers followed a script asking consumers about their income goals, and regardless of the goal size, the telemarketers were instructed to respond, "I'm 100% confident we can help you."
The FTC is issuing payments to 1,922 consumers who purchased coaching or mentoring programs from Lurn. Most recipients will receive a check by mail and should cash it within 90 days, as stated on the check. Consumers without an address on file will receive a PayPal payment, which must be redeemed within 30 days.
Consumers with questions about their payment can contact the refund administrator, Rust Consulting, at 833-637-3837 or visit the FTC website for frequently asked questions about the refund process. The FTC never asks for money or account information to issue a refund.
